Sennheiser GSX 1000

USB Headphone Amplifier with Virtual Surround for Gamers and Movie Lovers

In a nutshell

The GSX 1000 proves itself much more than a simple headphone amplifier. It also provides a convenient desktop centre for sound output thanks to its USB power supply and housing, featuring convenient volume control and user-friendly switching between speaker and headphone selections. Even headphones enjoy their own connection, allowing for independent volume control.

The real key selling feature here is the virtual surround sound playback with up to 7.1 audio channels. With these impressive credentials, the GSX 1000 from Sennheiser provides room-filling sound spectacle for enhanced movie enjoyment and gaming sessions. It can also give everyday music playlists a significant boost. From an audiophile point of view, this latter aspect shouldn’t be scrutinised too heavily, although thanks Sennheiser’s signature technical flair, processing and sound quality won’t disappoint. Incidentally, an upgraded model, the GSX 1200, is also now available. This enhanced version boasts dedicated chat-link ports for a mere 20 euros more than the RRP of the GSX 1000.

A headphone amplifier is by no means something that should only be utilised for music enjoyment. This class of accessory is also a worthwhile accessory to have for enhanced movie playback and gaming. It certainly makes for a more immersive, exciting time when surround comes into play…

In short, the Sennheiser GSX 1000 is a desktop device that is a specialised audio interface intended for use with Windows and Mac computers. It connects directly to the corresponding audio configuration of the relevant operating system, with no need to download additional drivers.

This compact unit, with its optionally angled black plastic housing, not only looks decorative, but offers user-friendly controls and fast access to key functions via touch alone. All of this is visualised via high-contrast red graphics or a level display, while an auto dim function is also included.

Connections include both a headphone and speaker outfit, as well as a microphone input at the rear of the device for communication during gaming sessions. All of these are offered as 3.5mm mini jacks. At the back of the device, you’ll also find the USB socket, which conveniently serves as the power supply of the amplifier.

More Than Simple Stereo

The truly innovative feature of the GSX 1000 is its binaural rendering engine. This feature means that two-channel recordings, as well as films and games in surround sound up to 7.1, can be ported to headphones so you can experience them with authentic virtual surround sound.

Practice

After you’ve connected the GSX 1000 to your computer and operating system, you’re free to adjust the output levels via the large recessed volume control. You won’t have trouble identifying it – it’s the sleek aluminium wheel at the front. You can choose between headphone and speaker output just by touching it, while any microphone connected can be independently adjusted thanks to the knob at the side of the device.

An equaliser provides four presets, including movie and music modes, while there’s also a lean vocal-focused mode if you’re seeking sound a more specific tuning option.

Another button allows you to choose between regular stereo sound, a 24-bit HD variant not provided by my computer, as well as the aforementioned virtual 7.1 surround sound option. If you decide to select the latter option, you can use additional touch fields to set the focus of the virtual front or rear speakers, as well as adjust the playback to specific headphone types (open or closed systems, for example). This is particularly handy for optimising chat voice quality for gaming applications.

Finally, there’s the possibility to add another room simulation with two available settings (Open World, Confined Space). Since this option superimposes the original sound, it has to be considered as an effect, however it works discreetly and effectively enough to intensify the surround aspect even more.

The respective settings can be saved via four touch fields found at the corners of the amplifier housing. With these saved, settings can be recalled later in a flash, with the settings remaining stored, even after the device is turned off. Unfortunately, the so-called ‘Tournament Mode’ could not be activated beyond basic volume controls and noise suppression, even with the latest firmware update (5.23.37.0.808).

Sound

The GSX 1000 already demonstrates good performance when it comes to sound reproduction in two-channel stereo. Sound is reproduced neutrally, with a full frequency spectrum and sufficient reserves. The tonal control helps with specific issues, although it remained switched off for the most part. The main hook here of course is the virtual surround sound offering, which I have to commend as practical in application and something that more than delivered when put through its paces with a selection of movie trailers. Movies and games are granted a spatial dimension that one would miss with conventional headphone playback or when restricted to conventional stereo mode. Even enhancing conventional music tracks with such spatiality is a rewarding experience. With this innovative feature, the GSX 1000 is well worth a look, especially for film buffs and diehard gamers.
