The LG XBOOM Go DXG2T Bluetooth speaker is so small, light and robust that it can be taken anywhere at any time. The elasticated carrying strap with an adjustable loop is a clever solution, making it easy to attach to a rucksack, bike handlebars or umbrella stand.

LG XBOOM Go DXG2T Package

In addition to the speaker, the box contains a USB-A to USB-C charging cable (30 centimetres) and a quick start guide. A charger is not included, but the battery can be charged with standard chargers, power banks or via a computer. This can be done within four hours if the speaker is empty after around 10 hours of operation.

When you pick up the 280-gram XBOOM Go, you immediately notice its extremely solid construction. LG claims robustness according to military standards and IP67 certification. This means protection against dust and dirt as well as water resistance up to complete submersion. So, music from the XBOOM Go will certainly make a hike in the pouring rain a little more pleasant. And if you want, you can even go swimming in the pool with your music.

The power button and play/stop button are located on the front grille, and the play button can also be used to skip tracks forwards and backwards (press twice or three times). On the back, by the passive radiator outlet, there is a Bluetooth button and a button to activate ‘Soundboost’. There is also an unprotected USB-C port on the underside.

The appearance of the speaker is dominated by the red analogue volume knob on the side and the elastic strap, which is fixed into the frame at three clamping points. The instructions explain how to use this to cleverly attach the speaker to a pole. One criticism of the strap is the fact that, although there are many ways to attach it to various places, it cannot be completely removed from the speaker.

Function and operation of the LG XBOOM Go DXG2T

When taken together with the ‘LG XBOOM’ app, this is an amazingly good overall package that leaves very little to be desired. First of all, the LG XBOOM Go works with Bluetooth 5.3, comes with SBC and AAC and only loses contact with the music player when over 50 metres away in open terrain. Multipoint allows two players to be paired at the same time, and this operation is very easy thanks to the Bluetooth button: Simply press and connect to the second device. The music from the first device will continue to play.

Using the app, two XBOOM GOs can then be paired to form a real stereo pair (dual mode) using the ‘Wireless Party Link’ function, or you can pair several of these speakers to form a small sound wall in multi-mode.

You can also manage updates, switch off the signal tones, and program various switch-off timers. The equaliser offers two pre-sets and a six-band EQ. The ‘Soundboost’ pre-set can also be activated directly on the speaker for a fuller, more balanced sound. Nature and feel-good sounds can be downloaded in the ‘XBOOM Lab’ section of the app; these promise a therapeutic effect and can be played in the ‘Healing Therapy’ section. A practical point: If the speaker is connected to a power supply, it can be switched on remotely via the Bluetooth menu of your player if this option has been activated in the app.

Sound of the LG XBOOM Go DXG2T

At low volume, in close proximity, for example, directly next to you on the table or hanging from the strap of your rucksack, the XBOOM Go sounded pleasantly warm and multi-layered. Thanks to well-tuned signal processing – especially when the Sound Boost was activated – the sound was not as thin as the rather low volume of the speaker might suggest. There was definitely something going on in the bass range, albeit tentatively, and it decreased as the volume increased. The louder it goes and the further you move away from the speaker, the more the upper mid-range overpaints the sound. The treble lacked airiness, and above medium volume, the sound seemed somewhat clipped. The narrow dispersion angle of the speaker also contributed to the fact that you quickly find yourself outside the optimum sound range.

Phone calls and battery life of the LG XBOOM Go DXG2T

Phone calls via the speaker worked without any problems, the incoming voice was easy to understand, and the person on the other end of the call also attested to good intelligibility – if, of course, you stay close enough to the speaker’s built-in microphone. The speaker offers 10 hours of battery life at a moderate volume; this is not a particularly long play time and certainly not enough for a whole day outside.

Conclusion

The LG XBOOM Go DXG2T is a robust accessory for use in all kinds of rugged environmental conditions outside your own four walls, on the water, in a dusty desert or on the beach. Thanks to the elasticated carrying strap, it can be easily and securely attached in many places and taken anywhere. It is designed to provide quiet to medium-loud entertainment or gentle background music in the immediate vicinity of the speaker or for a small group in a confined space. Even if the appearance of the LG XBOOM Go suggests it offers a bigger sound, its design means it cannot provide enough volume for large parties.
