The Beyerdynamic MMX 330 Pro is an open variant of the MMX 300 Pro (review). If you are looking for a headset with the wide sound of open headphones rather than a closed model, this is the one for you. The only caveat is that it does not have to be wireless, as the MMX 330 Pro comes with a detachable cable.

Beyerdynamic MMX 330 Pro – what you get

The cable is 2.5m long, which is plenty of room to move at your desk, in your living room at home or at a LAN party. If you prefer a shorter cable, you can purchase a 1.2m connection cable for use with game consoles. The two mini-jack connectors on the input end of the supplied cable allow you to connect it to most PC sound cards. A Y adaptor is included so you can use the headset with a game console, smart device or other device with a TRS mini jack socket. So it’s safe to use with PS4, PS5, Xbox, Nintendo Switch and other consoles. The included cable has a one-button remote control that also has an adjustment wheel and a slide switch.

A pop filter is included for the headset’s microphone, which is made in Germany. It ensures interference-free speech. Unfortunately, there is no carrying case or other storage or transport options.

Design and features of the Beyerdynamic MMX 330 Pro

The new generation of the MMX 300 series MMX headsets has a contemporary, contoured design. The simple black ear cups are fitted with replaceable velour pads, as is the headband pad. The spring steel headband behind them provides both flexibility and stability. In classic Beyerdynamic style, the audio cable comes out of the swivel joints on the earcups. The left earcup has a rotating microphone arm. It can be flexed to allow for optimal microphone placement. This is also necessary because the built-in electret condenser microphone has a cardioid polar pattern. Unlike an omnidirectional microphone, the cardioid requires precise alignment.

And here’s a little extra: if you want to spice up the simple look of the headphones, you can have Beyerdynamic’s manufacturing department customise the outside of the headphones to your own design. The possibilities are endless: personalised ear cups, coloured ear pads, decorative rings and individual engravings.

Specifications of the Beyerdynamic MMX 330 Pro

The microphone picks up all components of human speech that can normally be processed by the ear. This means that its audio range is from 20 Hz to 20 kHz. The range of playback frequencies is much wider. They range from 5 Hertz to 40 Kilohertz, covering everything from deep bass to super high pitched sounds, even frequencies that the human ear cannot normally hear. This is thanks to the STELLAR.45 drivers, which are also used in some of Beyerdynamic’s studio headphones. They deliver a sound pressure level of over 98.57 dB/SPL. To ensure that this is also possible with consoles, laptops and smartphones, the MMX 330 has a nominal impedance of 49.7 ohms (average).

The Beyerdynamic MMX 330 Pro in use

The Beyerdynamic MMX 330 Pro is comfortable to handle and wear for a number of reasons. The headband’s notched size adjustment requires both hands to adjust at first, but then stays in the optimal position. The headband cushion has a cut-out in the fontanelle area, which means there is very little pressure when worn for long periods. In addition, the earcup cushions fit so comfortably around the ears that the firm contact pressure on the head is not a negative factor. On the contrary, it ensures that the headset, which weighs just over 311 grams, stays in place even when your head moves quickly.

The one-sided cable and the connection on the left earcup give right-handers plenty of freedom of movement. The remote’s call answer button and integrated volume control are both reliable. However, if you are interested in using the mute control, it is important to check its compatibility with your smart device.

The sound of the Beyerdynamic MMX 330 Pro

The Beyerdynamic MMX 330 Pro’s condenser microphone is sensitive enough that it does not need to be placed directly in front of the mouth. However, this is easily possible with the help of the gooseneck. The directional characteristic of the microphone also ensures that, when correctly positioned, it picks up mainly the voice and only a small amount of ambient noise.

In contrast to the closed MMX 300 Pro model, the MMX 330 Pro hardly attenuates ambient noise at all. On the one hand, this means that gamers using this headset will not be able to concentrate fully on their games. On the other hand, it also means that you can take part in events in the immediate vicinity while wearing the headset. Finally, the open design provides natural, uncompressed sound. However, if you want to use the MMX330 Pro at home, you should be aware that the headset’s playback is clearly audible from outside.

Their low impedance means they can deliver full sound at high volumes from a wide range of devices. But that doesn’t mean they can’t really liven things up with their pronounced stereo image and differentiated dynamics.

The MMX 330 Pro’s high-frequency response is impressive, with clear details and a crisp image. The super-high range above is characterised by openness. Vocals are easy to understand thanks to the headphones’ mid-range profile. Below that, the bass is reproduced with clear contours and low bass is also well handled. With this practical and natural sound profile, the headphones are equally suited to games with a high proportion of voice and action, as well as in-game chat and video conferencing.

The bottom line

The Beyerdynamic MMX 330 Pro wired over-ear headset with its open ear cups delivers natural, uncompressed sound that is lively and spacious. There is also a condenser microphone that delivers really good vocal sound. If you are looking for a headset that you can use for long periods of time, the comfort of the MMX 330 Pro will satisfy you. Wear and tear is not an issue, as the cable, ear pads and headband cushion are all replaceable. Cables and adapters allow you to connect the headset to a wide range of devices. And its specifications make it a versatile tool.

Although a soft case or at least a carrying bag would have been nice, the MMX 330 Pro is good value for money. Last but not least, it can be optically customised at the Beyerdynamic factory.

If you are looking for a comfortable headset with natural sound for gaming or videoconferencing, the Beyerdynamic MMX 330 Pro is a good choice.
