The second generation of Beyerdynamic’s DT 1990 Pro studio headphones is now available in a 30-ohm version. Do the open, circumaural studio headphones have anything new to offer?

Beyerdynamic DT 1990 Pro MKII package contents

In addition to the headphones themselves, the Beyerdynamic DT 1990 Pro MKII 30 Ohm package also includes an interchangeable cable. The cable is terminated on the output side with a mini XLR connector with a locking mechanism to ensure a secure fit. To cater for a wide range of applications, the package includes both a 3 metre straight cable and a coiled cable that can be extended to 5 metres. Two gold-plated screw-on adapters for 6.3mm jack plugs are also included. All plugs on these cables are gold-plated to ensure high conductivity for as long as possible.

Two pairs of ear pads are supplied with the headphones. These allow the DT 1990 Pro MKII to deliver two different sound profiles. A leatherette pouch is also included to protect the headphones from dust. All parts are safely stored in a hard case that protects the headphones during transport and storage.

Design, materials and technology of the Beyerdynamic DT 1990 Pro MKII

The Beyerdynamic DT 1990 Pro MKII is manufactured in Germany and follows in the footsteps of the previous generation (to the test) with its black anodised metal brackets. In general, the company has stuck to the tried and tested design and not dared to experiment. These circumaural studio headphones are impeccably crafted, and the choice of materials provides just the right mix of elegance and solidity.

The new Tesla.45 drivers, which operate dynamically inside the headphones, use neodymium magnets with a flux density of over 1 Tesla. This is designed to enhance the dynamic response of the playback. At the same time, these drivers ensure low impedance. This means the headphones can be easily connected to laptops and smartphones.

However, in terms of audio transmission range, the MKII version offers no added value over the previous generation. The DT 1990 Pro MKII also reproduces audio in the spectrum between 5 Hz and 40 kHz. However, if you compare the headphones with their sibling, the DT 990 Pro, you will notice that the test candidate reaches higher frequencies around 5 kHz than the smaller model.

Handling of the Beyerdynamic DT 1990 Pro MKII

The Beyerdynamic DT 1990 Pro MKII offers the same smooth handling as its predecessor. As with other Beyerdynamic models, the headband adjustment is quite stiff. On the plus side, this prevents the headband from being adjusted too easily.

The headband is made of spring steel and exerts a relatively high pressure. This is necessary. Without the cable, the headphones weigh 369 grams. In other words, they are slightly heavier than the MKI version, but still considerably heavier than the DT 990 Pro. To further reduce the pressure on the head, the replaceable headband pad has a fontanel recess. The inside of the pad is filled with memory foam to better absorb the weight of the headphones. It is wrapped in faux leather.

Replaceable velour ear pads allow your ears to breathe underneath. This makes them comfortable to wear for hours on end. Finally, the cable is routed on one side and attached on the left, allowing right-handers freedom of movement in the studio.

Sound of the Beyerdynamic DT 1990 Pro MKII

Beyerdynamic promised us an almost undistorted, precise sound with the Tesla drivers. And the DT 1990 Pro MKII keeps this promise. Compared to the original model, the MKII version is more subtle in the treble range, but at the same time offers more detail. In particular, the frequency range around 8 kHz has been slightly reduced.

The balanced frequency distribution results in a more natural sound overall, with the mid-range not overpowering. Instead, this range offers details that allow speech, guitar sounds and synthesizers to be appreciated. Basses are reproduced with clear contours. And even in the sub-bass range, despite the open design, there are sufficient reserves that can be teased out with the appropriate EQ. When it comes to the transition from high mids to low treble, the DT 1990 Pro MKII allows for a more differentiated mix of vocals, guitars and synthesizers without sounding harsh.

The headphones’ stereo image and agile dynamics create a sense of spaciousness and good localisation. When it comes to transients, the DT 1990 Pro MKII do an admirable job, reproducing them with equal parts precision and punch. In practice, the two sets of different ear pads produce slightly different sound profiles. One set of cushions produces a slightly richer bass and is intended for production work. Those who prefer a more neutral sound can use the other set of ear pads, which are optimised for mixing and mastering.

Conclusion

The Beyerdynamic DT 1990 Pro MKII 30 Ohm are, without a doubt, high-quality circumaural open studio headphones. These premium headphones, made in Germany, can be configured with interchangeable cables and ear pads. They are comfortable and easy to use. Their natural sound is impressive and ideal for mixing and mastering. Add to this a package that offers real added value. Combined with their classic look and “Made in Germany” seal of quality, the Beyerdynamic DT 1990 Pro MKII are a great choice for mixing and mastering enthusiasts, from home recording to professional studios.
