Beyerdynamic DT 1770 Pro MKII package contents
The Beyerdynamic DT 1770 Pro MKII comes with a wide range of accessories. A 3-metre straight cable and a 5-metre coiled cable are included. Both end in a mini XLR plug on one end and a 3.5 mm jack plug on the other. All plugs are gold-plated to prevent corrosion. The same applies to the two screw-on adapters for 6.3 mm jack plugs that are also included.
The DT 1770 Pro MKII comes with a second pair of ear pads with a slightly different design to provide different sound profiles for different working situations. A highlight of the package is the custom-fit hard shell case, which keeps the headphones safe and secure during transport. A leatherette pouch is also included for dust-free storage.
Technology, Design and Materials of the Beyerdynamic DT 1770 Pro MKII
The MKII version of the DT 1770 Pro is equipped with the TESLA.45 drivers that Beyerdynamic is using in several new models. The neodymium magnets in these drivers produce a particularly high flux density. The DT 1770 Pro MKII benefits from the new drivers with a lower impedance, making it compatible with smart devices and laptops. Our measurements put the impedance at 31.3 ohms. In addition, the headphones, which we measured at up to 96 dB SPL, should deliver more differentiated dynamics. In terms of frequency response, there is no difference from the previous model. The second generation also covers 5 Hz to 40 kHz.
When designing the DT 1770 Pro MKII, Beyerdynamic went back to the design of the first generation (review). This was a good decision. After all, the design of the headphones is timeless. If you value the right choice of materials, easy maintenance and high-quality workmanship, the MKII is the right choice for you. The DT 1770 Pro MKII’s robust black anodised metal earpieces, replaceable and bolted components and German manufacturing are all part of the package.
Handling the Beyerdynamic DT 1770 Pro MKII
Several factors make the Beyerdynamic DT 1770 Pro MKII a candidate for hours of trouble-free work. The single-sided cable ensures that the headphones do not get in the way of right-handers. The spring steel headband has a high contact pressure. It holds the 373g headphones securely in place.
The DT 1770 Pro MKII’s replaceable ear pads fit snugly around the head and allow far less air and sound to escape than the velour ear pads that come with the headphones. The velour ear pads fit more snugly around the ears. They allow your ears to breathe, so you won’t sweat even if you wear them for a long time. The same goes for the memory foam headband padding. It has a cut-out to ensure that the headband does not press on the fontanelle. The cover of this padding is also replaceable.
A minor criticism is the notch in the headband. Although it prevents you from accidentally changing the size, you have to use both hands to lock the headphones in place if you want the size adjustment to be the same on both sides.
The sound of the Beyerdynamic DT 1770 Pro MKII
With the Beyerdynamic DT 1770 Pro MKII, audio signals can be localised with excellent stereo imaging and depth. With enhanced bass when using the standard ear pad set or an even more natural sound when using the additional ear pads, the DT 1770 Pro MKII offers sound profiles suitable for both production and mixing and mastering.
It reproduces bass in a full and powerful way. Deep bass is no problem. The well-differentiated low frequencies do not lead to unwanted resonances, despite the closed design. In addition, its sound is low in distortion even at high volumes. Compared to its predecessor, the DT 1770 Pro MKII’s high-frequency response has been reduced and the sound is softer around 8 kHz. This makes it suitable for use in modern pop and rock productions, which tend to be heavily produced.
The bottom line
The second generation of the closed beyerdynamic DT 1770 Pro MKII is almost universally convincing in the practical test. With a lower impedance and a revised high-frequency character, the new edition of the over-ear headphones is now much better suited for today’s studio tasks. However, the sonic fingerprint of its predecessor has by no means been lost. In addition, the natural-sounding reproduction of the Beyerdynamic headphones can be adapted to different working situations.
Last but not least, the DT 1770 Pro MKII are easy to handle, very comfortable to wear and come with a much larger scope of delivery than many competing models, including interchangeable ear pads, two long cables and a carrying case. With its closed design, the Beyerdynamic DT 1770 Pro MKII is also a good choice for recording. Anyone who has been using the headphones as studio headphones for mixing and mastering will be even more satisfied with the MKII version.
Beyerdynamic has also released an open version to match this closed model. You can read our review of the Beyerdynamic DT 1990 Pro MKII here.
