The Best Noise Cancelling Headphones
Headphones with noise cancelling filter out unwanted noise. If you travel a lot, you can enjoy a little more peace and silence on a plane or train, for example. This means not only more listening pleasure, but also less stress, which has been proven to be caused by annoying background noises.
The technology behind noise cancelling is quickly explained: With so-called active noise cancelling, ambient noises are captured by microphones and simply rotated 180 degrees in phase. These reversed sound waves are placed over the “normal” noise and (ideally) erase it. When purchasing, however, make sure that the headphones have the correct design: an ear-enclosing and ear-sealing design provides additional insulation. This is called passive noise cancelling. There are also models out there that work purely passive, meaning the whole active technology is missing, which makes the headphones lighter and cheaper. Due to their design, these headphones are not as powerful as their active colleagues.
