Libratone Track Air+

True-wireless headphones with Bluetooth 5 and noise cancelling

In a nutshell

With the Track Air+ Libratone delivers a harmonious and well-equipped true wireless product, which convinces both functionally and in the design, but also sonically, even if the manufacturer could still go some way to improve the tap functions. It’s clear that Apple now have another strong competitor in the market.

The Danish manufacturer Libratone presents the Track Air +, true wireless headphones with adaptive noise cancelling.

These lightweight IPX 4 sweat and splash-proof headphones are available in both black and white. They have a stylish silver fin that runs in the direction of the earlobe, accommodating two microphones, which ensure good speech intelligibility during telephone calls. The in-ears are supplied in a small transport case, which also serves as a charging station. The headphones snap magnetically into place inside.

Track Air+ have Bluetooth 5 and aptX codec on board, but aptX HD/LL or LDAC are not part of the package. As for controls, Libratone limits itself to one configurable tap function per earphone (double tapping the outside). This is configured via the free iOS/Android Libratone app. In addition, the app offers a battery level indicator, a Voicing EQ with three modes and the “Noise Cancelling/Ambient Monitoring” function. Firmware updates can also be installed on the Track Air+. Libratone has already announced support for the AAC codec, which is an improvement on the SBC codec previously used in iOS.

In practice

Thanks to the four adapters that are included, the light weight and a shape that doesn’t protrude too far from the ear, I found that these headphones gave me good wearing comfort that didn’t pinch even during longer listening sessions. At the same time, the fit is secure enough for use during sporting activities. Depending on the application, it is also possible to work with only one earpiece; for example, when making phone calls in the car.

The headphones offer a practical battery life of six hours, with the case providing additional capacity for up to three full charges. Depending on the volume and the use of noise suppression, this gives a total playing time of up to 24 hours before charging with the included USB-C cable is required. Energy saving is also helped by the automatic switch-off (Wear Detect) of the headphones when they are removed from your ears. Finally, the optional wireless Libratone Coil charger is also supported. Pairing takes place straight from the case. The Track Air+ offers a stable and fast connection, which really proves itself when used on the move. Its range, on the other hand, is rather limited and breaks off if you go upstairs in your house.

The app is clearly laid out and the tap functions on the device are expandable. The following functions are available for each side: Starting and pausing playback, switching the noise-cancelling mode, title jump (forwards, not backwards) and calling the language assistant in your smartphone. Calls can be accepted and ended using the same function. The volume, on the other hand, cannot be controlled. In general, I found the double click on the earphones a bit annoying, because the sound is transferred to your eardrums.

Noise Cancelling

The integrated system for the suppression of ambient noise works mainly in the bass range. It can be adjusted manually, but can also automatically adapt to the environment – even if slightly differentiated. In addition to the passive attenuation, the active isolator provides enhanced enjoyment of music especially in when not moving. Without music, it creates isolation from disturbing external noise, especially static and low-frequency noise. A feeling of too much insulation does not arise, but, even at the maximum setting, the degree of shielding is not too extreme. The Air+ track is nevertheless a good choice for use while travelling.

Perception of the outside environment can be increased with the “Ambient Monitoring” function. Here, for example, the tap function lowers the music level and the microphones add outside noise to the auditory path. This makes it easier to communicate without having to remove the headphones. Very practical.

Sound

The general impression of the Track Air+ is a convincing one. You will find an effortless, rich and powerful sound image with sufficient definition and clarity, which is pleasantly balanced and, when necessary, giving strong levels.

In the bass it sounds clean, massive, warm, but also slightly overstressed. But these headphones deliver a good, recognizable tonality right down to the low bass. In the midrange, the dynamic 5.3 mm drivers also provide a warm tone, which flatters women’s and men’s voices as well as acoustic instruments. It also adds adequate contour and intelligibility. In the upper frequencies, the Track Air+ is detailed and open. It never sounds biting; rather, it’s a bit too polite. The spatial representation is clear in depth and rich in detail. Reverb is easy to spot, but real depth gradation less so. The device under test here deserves a good mark for its dynamic imaging. Even quiet classical passages are clearly audible. In summary, the Track Air+ delivers an appealing performance, which I wouldn’t quite describe as audiophile, but as pleasingly high performance for mobile use and certainly appropriate within its price range. The tuning in the bass is a bit “cheeky” and slightly tamed in the treble, therefore pleasing when used with the neutral Voice EQ. With these headphones, you get a powerful and cheerful listening experience, particularly for mobile use.
