The Aiaiai TMA-2 DJ Preset is a specially designed configuration for DJs. If you’re looking for this specific frequency response for turntable sessions, the TMA-2 is both a stylish and quality-sounding choice of headphone.
This DJ Preset of the TMA-2 modular headphone system from Aiaiai is designed specifically for DJ applications. In our test, we’ll assess whether or not it holds up to its promise.
With the TMA-2 modular system, Aiaiai is enriching the market with an innovative approach to headphone design. At the moment, the customer can choose from 22 individual components, with a selection of four speakers, four headbands, seven ear cushions and seven cables to consider. If you’d rather keep things simple and opt for something complete, you can choose one of the ready-made preset configurations.
Specially Designed for DJs
This DJ preset consists of the S02 loudspeaker, the H02 headband, the E02 ear cushion and the C02 connection cable. This is a spiral cable (approximately 1.5 to 3.2 metres in length), which also includes an integrated mini jack adapter. Basically, the variant here corresponds almost perfectly to its predecessor, the TMA-1. Saying that, we do hope the plastic construction of the headband holds up a little better than the material used with that previous model.
Placed side by side, these two versions are almost indistinguishable from one another. There’s subtle details, however, like the detachable loudspeaker connection. Wearing comfort is good, even though there’s some DJ-specific features missing that would have been welcome here, like a folding mechanism, for example. However, low-profile and minimal design has always been one of Aiaiai’s strengths.
The S02 module, which has the assigned attribute of “Punch”, also resembles its predecessor in terms of sound quality. However, the manufacturer has shifted the tonal weighting here away from the treble in favour of the bass range. This is good for your ears if you’re wearing these for long sessions, particularly when you’re adjusting volume regularly. It’s also good if you’re looking to avoid sharp highs bothering the ear canal. However, for hi-fi listening experience, a little more treble wouldn’t go amiss.
Of all the possible combinations of the TMA-2, the DJ preset is the most similar to its predecessor, the TMA-1, in terms of sound and aesthetics. The S02 module makes a slight difference in terms of sound, however. Unlike the S01 Allround component, things are shifted more toward the bass range. However, since Aiaiai’s S01, S03 and S04 components are loudspeakers with a much richer sound with balanced treble that doesn’t neglect the bass, we wouldn’t recommend the S02 for everyday listening applications. Don’t despair, however, as Aiaiai offers plenty of alternatives to consider with its Modular System selection.
