Kygo A6/500

On-ear Bluetooth handset with app connection

In a nutshell

The Kygo A6/500 is a solid Bluetooth headset designed for a younger audience hungry for more bass and possibly an alternative to Beats. In this respect, the Kygo is especially recommended for bass enthusiasts, for commuting in the subway or to escape from the outside world for just a little while. For the office, the headphones are only suitable for some environments, because they let a little sound out.

Kygo sets out from Norway to conquer the market for Bluetooth headphones. The spectrum ranges from in-ear headphones to fluffy over-ears, and compact on-ear headphones, such as the A6/500, which come in a stylish packaging with embossed printing. The highlight: In addition to the headphones, there is an app for advanced sound settings.

The handsets are made of matte plastic so that fingerprints will leave no trace. The soft imitation leather feels good and the on-ear shells lie comfortably on the ears without pressing. At the same time, they shield enough outside noise to allow a direct sound experience. The Kygo’s earcups can be folded in for safe transport and a bag is included to protect the headphones from dust and dirt. A USB and an audio cable complete the package. Operation is via three buttons on the right earpiece, which allow you to adjust the volume, pause the music, skip tracks and accept calls.

Sound

In the listening test, the stage presents itself compactly: Direct. Big. Straightforward. Just right for rap or electro, the Kygo A6/500 won’t suit those who prefer jazz or classical music as the sound is just a bit too crowded. Suited more to those looking for bass-heavy headphones in the Beats category than those who want to end their day on the sofa with a glass of red wine and a good jazz or pop record, this model’s emphasis in the bass, lower mids and upper frequencies is a bit too concise for more delicate listeners.

App for iOS and Android

As a special highlight, Kygo offers an app for Android and iOS for the A6/500. This allows firmware updates of the headphones, which is always welcome in the Bluetooth area, and also offers the option of adding a bass boost and fading between four equaliser presets. The adjustments via the mobile app also work when the headphones are paired with, for example, a computer. The sound presets are labelled with city names, each representing a specific sound. For example, Bergen for sparsely instrumented, airy pieces or New York for rap. This certainly makes the application easier for inexperienced users. The EQ is very tight and emphasises the frequencies that are crucial for certain musical styles. This makes pieces from other genres sound partly nasal or dull. If Bass Boost is switched on, the sound of bass music in the lower frequency range can be very overloaded, so be careful.
