The circumaural, closed-back Beyerdynamic MMX 300 Pro offers a wired solution for studio-standard gaming sound and voice quality.

The Beyerdynamic MMX 300 Pro is the latest addition to the German manufacturer’s portfolio of gaming headsets. After the current headset models MMX 100 and the MMX 150 with USB connection and the wireless MMX 200 Wireless, Beyerdynamic now offer a headphone-microphone combination that utilises the technology of their newer studio headphone models. This new headset is designed to provide that high-resolution sound for gamers, too.

Beyerdynamic MMX 300 Pro package

The German-made Beyerdynamic MMX 300 Pro comes with a 2.5m long, straight connection cable, with an integrated remote control with a button, slide switch and analogue adjustment wheel. The interchangeable cable ends at two 3.5mm stereo mini jack connections. The enclosed Y adapter can be connected to these. It ends in a 3.5mm TRRS mini jack plug, which is suitable for connecting to game consoles as well as smart devices. This means that this gaming headset is compatible not only with PCs, laptops, and smart devices but also with gaming consoles such as PS5, PS4, Xbox, Nintendo Switch, and others.

An optional 1.2m console cable with integrated remote is available. This is practical if you don’t need a long cable length. On the other hand, it eliminates the need for an adapter. It also includes a microphone pop filter that reduces wind and breathing noise. The package does not contain a case or a transport bag.

Material and construction of the Beyerdynamic MMX 300 Pro

The design and construction of these headphones essentially correspond to those of the MMX 300 of the second generation. However, the Beyerdynamic MMX 300 Pro looks slightly more angular and, therefore, more modern.

In addition to the simple design, Beyerdynamic also offers the option of customising these gaming headphones from the factory. Personalised engraving, different coloured ear pads and decorative rings are available, as well as individually designed ear cup backs. In the basic version, the ear pads are black and made of velvety-soft velour. They can be changed, as can the headband padding; this is opened with press studs and conceals a robust spring steel headband. At the end of the 19cm swivelling and flexible microphone boom is a condenser microphone with back electret technology. It is designed to ensure precise voice transmission. This cardioid mic is designed to ensure precise voice transmission.

Technical specifications of the Beyerdynamic MMX 300 Pro

In contrast to its predecessor, the Beyerdynamic MMX 300 Pro uses dynamic STELLAR.45 drivers, which are also used in newer studio headphone models from Beyerdynamic, such as the DT 770 Pro X Limited that we recently tested. They give this gaming headset a remarkably wide frequency range, from ultra-low 5 Hz to very high 40 kHz. This means that it extends far beyond the typical human hearing range in both the low end and the high end.

The condenser microphone processes sound from 20 Hz to 20 kHz and completely covers the typical human hearing range. Therefore, no relevant vocal information is lost in sound conversion. We measured an impedance of 49.7 ohms, and this makes the headphones suitable for connecting to consoles, laptops and smart devices. They can also provide sufficient volume for use with lower-voltage headphone outputs. We measured the maximum sound pressure level at 98.57 dBSPL. This means they deliver enough power to the ears, even though we are dealing with a closed model.

Handling of the Beyerdynamic MMX 300 Pro

The Beyerdynamic MMX 300 Pro’s cable is connected to the left ear cup. The one-sided cable routing gives right-handed users freedom of movement. When the headphones are put on, the headband does not automatically adjust to the head size but is slightly rasterised. This means you might need to use both hands to readjust the headband for optimum fit. But the headphones do memorise the last selected size adjustment when you take them off. The wearing comfort of these circumaural ear cups is so good that even hours of gaming are no problem. The fontanel recess in the headband padding also contributes to this. This was already familiar from the Beyerdynamic studio headphones DT 700 Pro X and DT 770 Pro X Limited. Due to the soft ear pads, the relatively strong contact pressure of the headband is hardly noticeable when wearing these headphones. The fact that the headphones don’t need a lot of pressure is also due to their weight of only 311g without the cable. For all these reasons, the MMX 300 Pro offers well-balanced wearing comfort.

The remote integrated into the cable has a slider for muting the microphone, which unfortunately did not work in our practical test with an Android smartphone. Therefore, buyers should check that it functions with the device of their choice. The situation is different with the volume control, which performed smoothly in all our tests. The remote also includes a button for answering/pausing calls. This provides the most important features for use with smartphones, etc.

Sound of the Beyerdynamic MMX 300 Pro

The Beyerdynamic MMX 300 Pro impressed us with clear, clean bass right down to the sub-bass, not only making it ideal for playing games with loud explosion noises and deep rumble sounds but also for listening to bass-heavy music at a high level.

A particular benefit was very high speech intelligibility in the mid-range, which was good for playing multiplayer games with voice chat. With in-game music, the intelligibility of vocals was correspondingly very good.

In the treble range, the MMX 300 Pro delivered transparency and detailed sound. In addition, the super high-frequency range of these headphones sounded open and wide. This contributed to an atmosphere during gaming that will mean gamers do not feel in any way “locked in” thanks to the closed design of the MMX 300 Pro.

In combination with the differentiated dynamic bass and the wide stereo image conveyed by these headphones, the result was a finely detailed and lively sound image that made gaming fun.

Thanks to the impedance, the Beyerdynamic headset was also impressive in terms of volume and delivered plenty of pressure on the ears. Its attenuation of external noise also contributed to this. However, the external attenuation was not outstanding.

Thanks to the combination of condenser technology and cardioid polar pattern, the microphone delivered a clean, detailed sound that significantly reduced sound from the sides. Due to the sensitivity of the microphone, the microphone boom did not even need to be bent directly in front of the mouth.

Conclusion

The Beyerdynamic MMX 300 Pro is a wired, circumaural headset that can transport gamers deep into their gaming worlds with detailed sound and a closed design. These headphones are ideal for localising targets and opponents acoustically. The high wearing comfort is ideal for hours of gaming. The cable, ear pads and headband pads are all replaceable. This ensures a long service life and further justifies the purchase price. With its cable/adapter combination, it offers many connection options, including compatibility with numerous game consoles. In addition to gaming, these headphones are also suitable for use in video conferences and for listening to music or watching films.

The Beyerdynamic MMX 300 Pro is a high-quality gaming headset with first-class sound and microphone sound, whose price-performance ratio is absolutely fine despite the lack of a case or transport bag in the package. It can, therefore, definitely keep the promises made by its advertising.
