The DT 1770 Pro is an absolute blueprint for quality, so for almost 600 euros you get a headphone that is worth its price in every respect.
The closed top model from Beyerdynamic sets sound standards.
Headphones from Beyerdynamic have been popular for many years, especially in recording studios. With the DT 770 Pro, now thirty years old, Beyerdynamic has set a price-performance standard that many other manufacturers have emulated. Where the DT 1770 Pro stands in this tradition is already revealed by the combination of numbers in its name, but let’s see how it sounds…
Top Class Sound
Particularly striking is the very good bass response: on the one hand, the DT 1770 comes down very low, on the other hand, it does not over-emphasise the slightly higher bass. Ultimately, it provides a catchy, voluminous bass – absolute class! The heights and mids are also tuned as I like them. Beyerdynamic is known for its silky heights and that’s what the DT 1770 Pro delivers, along with finely resolved mids. These sonic qualities remained even when I used the DT 1770 Pro on mobile players or notebooks: the influence of the headphone amplifier is not to be underestimated, but a very good headphone can make a very good impression on even mediocre amplifiers. Amazingly, it also played loud enough on these devices. Beyerdynamic calls this driver technology “Tesla 2.0” and it is responsible for not only the precise sound, but also the high efficiency.
Primary for professionals
The closed, circumaural DT 1770 Pro has very high external noise attenuation, which, depending on the ear cushions used (supplied in suede and imitation leather), makes the outside world appear around 20 dB quieter. This helps in studio or live use in all situations in which the best possible isolation is important. This includes not only the recording studio but also in a FOH seat during a concert. However, the robust and high-quality workmanship, which is appropriate to the high price, has one disadvantage: the DT 1770 Pro is a real heavyweight at just under 440 grams (incl. cable) which is not everyone’s cup of tea. Despite wearing it for several hours at a time, however, I didn’t suffer from neck pain or anything like that. On the contrary, I was very enthusiastic about the general wearing comfort and quickly got used to the higher weight. The fact that the headphone cables (Mini-XLR on jack) are interchangeable is a downright professional feature.
