The Beyerdynamic DT 770 M is a professional, no-frills tool for convenient control and playback of music. The headphones show at every point that this is a proven product that has been continuously optimised over the decades and whose qualities are convincing in every respect.
There’s little left to say about Beyerdynamic’s DT series. The fact that the design of the three basic models 770 (closed), 880 (half-open), 990 (open) dates back to the early eighties and has remained unchanged for more than three decades – apart from minor updates – speaks for itself.
Extremely good screening of ambient noise
The 80 Ohm, M variant that is being tested here is aimed specifically at users who are dependent on acoustic screening of ambient noise (according to the manufacturer: 35 dBA). Due to its optimised external noise attenuation, these users specifically include drummers, live engineers and film/radio sound engineers. Strictly speaking, DJs are also included in this user profile, but since the 80 Ohm version tested here plays with a rather moderate sound pressure level of 105 dB and its entire sound signature clearly points in the neutral direction, the other end users are better suited for this field of application.
The sound can convince in (almost) every respect
Provided the DT 770 M is connected to a sufficiently powerful amplifier, the 80 ohms represent a resistance that exceeds the power class of the output amplifiers of most mobile players. Indeed, the Beyerdynamic can play out all of its qualities on an appropriately dimensioned headphone amplifier: the depth and stereo positioning are excellent, and the sound is balanced, honest and high-resolution. The bass reflex system, as advertised by the manufacturer, proves to be an effective underlining of the sound foundation, and then there is the wearing comfort. Due to its size, the DT 770 M can justifiably be described as a genuine, ear-enclosing headphone. In other words, the replaceable, plush ear cushions snuggle up wonderfully smoothly to the head around the ear, which results in hours of fatigue-free wearing without pressure points. And if you are too lazy to go to the amplifier, the slider integrated in the cable helps to adjust the volume.
