Beyerdynamic DT 770 Pro LTD 80 Ohm

Limited enjoyment

In a nutshell

While the DT 770 Pro LTD 80 Ohm with limiter protects against hearing damage in live settings, sonically, its sound can’t live up to Beyerdynamic’s comparable models, like the DT 990 Pro 250 Ohm.

The closed DT 770 comes with a built-in limiter and, according to the manufacturer, is primarily intended for DJs and live use.

Headphones can be used in so many different situations and on any given day—on public transportation, in the studio, during recording and more. They’re also incredibly important in noisy places, like a club or concert arena, when controlling live music. The DT 770 Pro LTD 80 Ohm with Limiter is made exactly for this purpose; they allow a DJ to preview an upcoming song and allow sound engineers to hear musicians in concert so they can control the live mixing as it happens

Bass Sound

The DT 770 provides the trademark Beyerdynamic sound, with silky highs and a decent resolution in the middle. But the upper bass range is a bit too strong for my taste in this particular model. Tracks that sound balanced in the bass with comparable headphone models have now developed an unmistakable tendency to boom. This sound defect limits the use of the DT 770 Pro LTD 80 Ohm in a professional environment.

The built-in limiter keeps live musicians and the DJs from harmful levels of sound. For example, as soon as the volume limit (in this case, 99 dB) is reached, volume increases result in distortions without actually getting louder. This is a real plus for stage musicians.

Good workmanship with attention to detail

The large ear cups are very softly padded and even the headband features a soft artificial leather cover. The brackets themselves are made of very sturdy metal, with only the outer sheath of the ear cups compromised of plastic. As a nice touch, the markings for the left and the right channel are not only written on the outside of the temples but also marked in braille with the typical bumps. On dark stages, this detail also helps the listeners to put the headphones on the right side.

Heavy Duty Construction

The DT 770 Pro LTD 80 Ohm weighs 350 grams with its cable, which makes it a real piece of luggage in itself for use on the road. However, sturdy construction and a certain degree of stability are required for its intended use. The three-metre-long connection cable, including a gold-plated jack adapter, is firmly wired to the left auricle and would likely interfere with use on the smartphone. How loud the 80 Ohm model could actually sound on mobile players also can’t really be determined because of the limiter.
