The JBL E35 is a compact and comfortable on-ear headphone that will appeal to those customers who do not want to rely on in-ears for daily mobile or those who are working under a strict budget. At 70 euros, JBL provides an added value over other lower-end competitors.
With the E35 on-ear model, available in black, blue, white and red, JBL caters to users who prefer a bracket-mounted design with larger drivers for mobile use compared to in-ear models.
The closed headset of the E35 sits snugly and comfortably on the ears thanks, in large part, to its thick but soft padding, providing mid-range protection from ambient noise.
Upon first glance, it’s clear hi-fi lovers are not the target user of this device. Though the model features a 3.5 mm jack, the manufacturer doesn’t even supply the necessary adaptor to the 6.3 mm standard. To its credit, however, the E35 offers a textile-coated bracket and cable, which makes for a tangle-free connection. This cable leads unilaterally to the right ear cup of the headset where the device can be changed at any time. The three-pin jack plug is also better protected against bending than conventional constructions due to its practical 45-degree angling.
By no means a letdown, on the other hand, are the device’s individual ear cups that can be rotated in any direction. In fact, the E35 headphones don’t ever need to be set down; in handsfree mode, using them is easy – either in the DJ booth or just listening to music. The simple one-button remote control near the right ear is used to answer and end calls or music playback. The E35 is a practical partner for any smartphone and a welcome addition in situations where regular phone calls are made – on the road, in the office, or just at home.
Sound Quality
With its 40 mm drivers, the E35 delivers a harmonious sound with a balanced frequency response. The sound is not overemphasised in the bass nor in the high frequencies. With the centre resolution, vocal intelligibility and spatiality are appealing and also help work out the different qualities of various productions. There are, however, losses in the bass, in the maximum volume as well as in the general pressure, when playing pop and rock.
The E35 provides a reasonably authentic sound, although, when compared to classic hi-fi headphones, there are losses in the detail resolution and stereo image. Ultimately, it’s important to consider the price point, as well as the target demographic, which is largely made up of those looking for a headphone for mobile use. When considering those factors, the E35 provides effortless comfort and sound. The sound quality of the handsfree, however, is only passable.
