Optically, the Momentum In-Ear Wireless may take some getting used to at first, but the soft leather of the neckband is extremely comfortable to wear. The workmanship is first-class, and the stability of the Bluetooth connection and the quality of shielding are also convincing. And, if you don’t like the “out-of-the-box sound”, thanks to the app, you can adjust the detail to suit.
The Sennheiser neckband headset seems a little strange at first. Star Trek fans might be reminded of Geordi La Forge’s “Visor”, but this bracket hides the technology that allows the Momentum to work without cables.
The Momentum In-Ear Wireless is classy and simple. It comes with a case that seems a bit oversized for in-ear headphones, but does provide a safe place for the neckband. Also included are four different sized ear adapters and a USB charging cable. Fully charged within 1.5 hours, the battery can last about 10 hours, but not with continuous operation.
Processing and functions
The wireless Momentum is very neatly processed, with the soft leather around the neckband ensuring that it does not rub at any point. Due to the light construction, after a short time, you’ll forget that you are wearing something around your neck. Only the somewhat rigid cables, which connect the collar with the in-ear attachments, disturbed me as I found that they protruded a little too far for total comfort.
The coupling of the Sennheiser with the sound sources, in my case with both an iPhone 6 and an iPad, works smoothly and quickly. The Bluetooth connection is so stable and strong that I can walk around the house without breaking the connection.
The headphones can be operated intuitively using the controls on the left side of the bracket and the USB port and microphone are also located here. Phone calls work wonderfully, but whoever I’m talking to has to live with hissing noises as soon as I move my head – which unfortunately happens quite often. I wouldn’t recommend this for hours of phone calls with my best friend, nor for sports use. First, because the leather on the neckband is not sweat-resistant and second, because the headphones shield so well that you hardly notice anything about your surroundings.
Sound
In terms of sound quality, the Momentum In-Ear Wireless is very satisfactory overall and almost comes close to the wired Momentum. But only almost. It’s a bit more bass-heavy, there’s a frequency hole in the upper midrange and above that it sounds a bit pointed, so that “S” and “hiss” sounds are a little overemphasised in corresponding songs. Listening to “Cheap Thrills” by Sia illustrates this quite well. What’s nice is that you don’t have to simply endure this irritation as Sennheiser is happy to help. The free “CapTune” app for iOS and Android offers a finely adjustable equaliser, so you can adjust the sound of the Momentum In-Ear Wireless according to your preferences.
