Their handling is consistently pleasant, and the technology and performance are at a high level. If you love the open Austrian Audio Hi-X65, you will also be a fan of the closed Hi-X60. Together with the contents of the package, this results in an absolutely harmonious price-performance ratio. These headphones are ideal for critical listening when monitoring in the recording studio, but just as good for uninterrupted hi-fi enjoyment.

With the Austrian Audio Hi-X60, the Austrian manufacturer has added a pair of closed, circumaural headphones with excellent sound for audio professionals and hi-fi fans to its range.

Austrian Audio introduce the Hi-X60, the closed-back counterpart to their open-back headphones Hi-X65. We took a look and listened to the Hi-X60 in action. How does this model sound? And who is it suitable for?

Package and appearance

In addition to the unit itself, the cardboard box that the Austrian Audio Hi-X60 arrive in contains two connecting cables of different lengths, a screw adapter and a cloth bag, as well as various printed materials. A cloth bag for transporting the headphones is also included. Even when unpacked, the Hi-X60 make a thoroughly high-quality impression. Like the other headphones from this manufacturer, this model has an elegant appearance. Matt black dominates the look and is complemented by red lettering and logos.

Technology and specifications of the Austrian Audio Hi-X60

According to the manufacturer, the technical values of the Austrian Audio Hi-X60 correspond exactly to those of its open counterpart, the Hi-X65. Like Hi-X65, the HI-X60’s drivers deliver audio in the frequency range between 5 Hz and 28 kHz. This means they exceed the typical human hearing range in both bass and treble. With a maximum volume of 110 dB/SPL and a distortion factor of less than 0.1%, this model also promises distortion-free audio enjoyment up to really high volume levels. Thanks to a low impedance of only 25 ohms, these headphones can also be operated at a sufficient volume on low-voltage outputs.

Material and handling

Mechanically heavily used parts, such as the headband or the hinges of the ear cups, are made of metal on the Austrian Audio Hi-X60. This ensures long durability. The ear cups can be rotated 90 degrees so that the headphones can be transported flat in the bag provided and save a little space. If you want to save a little more space, the ear cups can be folded inwards on their hinges. The included interchangeable cables are plugged into the Hi-X60 on one side. This means that the user’s freedom of movement is not as restricted as with a double cable. The cable plug is hooked into the headphone socket after it has been plugged in by a small eighth turn. This keeps the cable securely in place and prevents it from slipping out, even under tensile stress.

The letters “L” and “R” are emblazoned in large letters on the earpieces so that they can be put on without second thought. The headband’s smooth, ratcheted size adjustment ensures that the size adjustment is comfortable and the headphones remember the last setting. Although the contact pressure is not too strong, the Hi-X60 still fits securely. Last but not least, the ear cup cushions optimally enclose the user’s ears. As a result, the isolation from outside noise is also really good.

A few words about the memory foam of the headband and the ear cups: Compared to many other headphones, these actually deserve to be called “memory” foam. They really do need a certain amount of time to return to their original shape after use. For me, that was a sign of quality.

Sound of the Austrian Audio Hi-X60

The very first notes I heard with the Austrian Audio Hi-X60 put a smile on my face. Transparent, clear highs and an open super-high frequency range made it clear that quality was at work here. Voices and vocals were present in the mids without sounding sharp. Basses were reproduced with appealing restraint and were still present even in the deepest lows. Depending on the audio source, however, an equaliser may have to be used to ensure that low bass is perceived on an equal footing with other frequency ranges. But then, the Hi-X60 delivers distortion-free sound even at higher volumes. However, in fuller productions, such as current pop songs, the highs can make up a significant part of the listening experience. Accordingly, other areas of perception take a back seat.

The Hi-X60 are anything but “dynamic mud”. And so, the transparency of the sound reproduction also comes about through its fast conversion of transients. As with many other Austrian Audio headphones, the subjective signal resolution of this model contributes to a fine depth gradation and an excellent stereo impression. And last but not least, the passive attenuation of external noise and the acoustic isolation from the outside world are successful.
