The EarFun Air Pro offer a harmonious overall package, which consists of good, unobtrusive sound, useful active noise reduction and solid workmanship. A few more remote commands, like skip back or volume control, would certainly be useful. Nevertheless, for daily use, the Air Pros are well equipped and worth their price.
With the Air Pro, EarFun offer completely wireless in-ears with active noise cancelling for a budget price of less than 80 Euro. But are they a sound package?
The basics
These origami-style folded in-ears arrive with the usual accessories: Charging box with USB-C connection, three pairs of earpieces in S, M and L, a USB-A to USB-C cable and a quick start guide. The Qi-compatible wireless charging option that is available with the EarFun Air is not available with the Air Pro.
A run time of up to nine hours is specified for these IPX5 sweat and splash-proof in-ears, but just over five hours with active ANC is more realistic. The flat-oval charging box, which is just about pocket-friendly, should be sufficient for three recharges, and the in-ears are held in a safe charging position magnetically with a satisfying “click”.
Connection, sound and ANC
Connection is established via Bluetooth 5.0 and SBC and AAC codecs are used to fire the 10mm compound drivers. You can use the EarFun Air Pro singly, but multipoint connections are not possible.
The fit and mechanical shielding of these in-ears are good, and touch fields on the back of the in-ears are ready for remote control. Tap three times on the left to switch through the ”ANC” and “Ambient” modes or choose neither of them – a friendly voice announces which one is currently active.
The Air Pro has well-balanced sound. When ANC is deactivated, neither bass nor treble is particularly prominent and the sound leaves a round impression. The mids are also well defined and give the Air Pro a warm character, which allows long and fatigue-free listening. When noise reduction is switched on, the bass is a bit richer and more powerful. There is a little bit of airiness due to the high frequencies, which might counteract the impression of a slightly limited sound image. The hybrid ANC, which works with both outward and inward-directed microphones, does its job properly. The low frequencies of a tram arriving were eliminated and the noise of an air conditioning system also faded from perception. However, this did not result in complete isolation from the outside world, nor did an excessive diving bell effect occur – the reduction is rather mild. When switched to ambient mode, the outside world again becomes more audible through the microphones, but it is quite noisy.
Phone calls made with the Air Pro sound pleasantly understated and intimate over the built-in microphones that are directed towards the mouth. This creates good intelligibility at the other end of the call, even in turbulent environments. Other remote commands such as start/stop, skip forward and call control can be accessed by tapping on the earpiece. An infrared sensor on the in-ears interrupts the music as soon as you take an Air Pro out of your ear and resumes when you put it back in.
